Egyptian authorities approved on Wednesday the presence of security forces inside Azhar University campus but without firearms, said an Interior Ministry statement.

President of Azhar University, Osama al-Abd, filed an official request that demanded that central security forces enter the university's campus in order to "protect lives and property" earlier on Wednesday.

Live footage on local television displayed central security vechiles as they entered the university campus.

Students of Azhar, the university mostly dedicated to Islamic teachings, have staged several protests since the new academic year began in September to condemn the ouster of President Mohamed Mursi.

Egypt's military ousted the Islamist president in July following mass protests against his rule, which enraged many Islamists.

The students clashed with security forces in pervious protests, which left some of them injured.
