Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, al-Azhar's Grand Imam, referred a list of criteria to elect a president for al-Azhar University to the university's board, allowing it to have a say in choosing its president for the first time.

The list of criteria will then be referred to the al-Azhar's high board to discuss and approve it, the Middle East News Agency reported.

The decision comes in response to university professors' request to involve them in discussing and reviewing these criteria before presenting them to al-Azhar's high board, al-Azhar said in a statement on Tuesday.

Al-Tayeb sacked Osama al-Abd, al-Azhar Univeristy president, in April following a major food poisoning incident at the university dormitories' cafeteria.
