CAIRO, Oct 10 (Aswat Masirya)- Egypt will begin renovating King Tutankhamen’s mask on Saturday, reported state run MENA news agency.
In August 2014, museum workers changing the lights in its display case accidentally dropped the over 3,000-year-old golden mask, detaching the beard then hurriedly glued it back on, said the antiquities ministry.
The incident was made public when photographs of the mask surfaced the internet and were shared on social media.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry donated EUR 50,000 for the renovation of the iconic mask which belongs to ancient Egypt's youngest king.
In January, Christian Ekman, a German conservator brought in to evaluate the damage, said in a press conference that the epoxy used to hold the beard can be removed which will not pose any danger to the artifact.
The young Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen belonged to the 18th Dynasty. His tomb was discovered in 1922. The mask is displayed at the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo.
