U.S. embassy to Cairo says it does not support certain group

The U.S. embassy to Cairo said on Tuesday it does not support any political group in Egypt, adding that elections alone are not enough to achieve democracy.
Some observers and Congressmen had accused the American administration of siding with the Muslim Brotherhood and rewarding Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi for complying with the goals of the U.S. national security.
"We do not support a specific political group in Egypt," the embassy tweeted earlier.
"We believe Egyptians will not accept anything but a democratic future."
Only Egyptians can choose their leaders, the embassy added.
Elections are a major component of democracy but alone they are insufficient, the embassy added.
Washington offers Egypt $1.3 billion annually as military aid.
The United States said earlier this month that it will provide $250 million to support the budget after President Mursi pledged to implement rigorous economic reforms to ensure acquiring an International Monetary Fund loan.
