Foreign Policy Chief of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, arrived to Cairo on Tuesday for a two-day visit, during which she is expected to meet with interim President Adli Mansour and other senior officials, reported the state news agency.

Ashton's visit marks the first by a senior EU official since the military deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. She is expected to hold talks regarding the EU's support to Egypt's transition into democracy.

"I will underline that Egypt needs to return as rapidly as possible to its democratic transition," the top EU diplomat said in a statement on Sunday.
