June 30 Front demands constitution before elections

The June 30 Front issued a statement on Tuesday demanding that Egypt’s constitution be finalized and put to a popular referendum before running any elections, in order to establish a democratic political system.

“Drafting the constitution as an initial step was a demand called for by different revolutionary forces since the ousting for President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, the correctness of this assessment is now clear to everyone,” said the statement.

The front, made up of the “Tamarod” (Rebel) campaign organizers who were behind the June 30 protests that toppled Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, explained that not doing so would be a repetition of the same mistake and would prolong the transitional phase.

The front asked the interim government to continue its engagement in dialogue with the revolutionary forces and youth so they are included in any important decisions concerning the transitional phase.

The front denounced what it described as “terrorism and incitement of violence” by the Muslim Brotherhood and their supporters, stressing that it accepts calls for national reconciliation.

The front also demanded that the status of the Islamist group be reviewed and regulated. It also demanded that all its activities, organizational structure and funding be announced transparently.
