CAIRO, Apr 6 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt has evacuated around 525 of its citizens from the restive country of Yemen since strikes targeting Houthi rebels started in late March, the Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.

Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdelatty said in a statement that 145 nationals have crossed out of Yemen and into Saudi Arabia since Sunday.

The ministry is also coordinating with "friendly" countries and private companies to evacuate Egyptians from Sanaa by air, Abdelatty added.

The number of Egyptians in Yemen is between 6,000 and 7,000 workers, according to government figures.

Egypt is part of a Saudi-led coalition which launched military operations against the Houthis in Yemen on March 26, after the Shia rebel movement made advances onto the Yemeni south.

Amid security concerns, Egypt started coordinating with Saudi Arabia and Oman last week for the return of Egyptians wishing to leave Yemen through land crossings.

The spokesman for the coalition leading military operations in Yemen Ahmed al-Asiri said on Saturday that Egyptians are among other internationals scheduled to be evacuated from Yemen.
