Clashes intensified between residents of Shubra area and scores of militants supporting former President Mohamed Mursi on Friday, the state news agency reported.

Gunshots fired by Mursi supporters at the residents were heard in the area, the agency's correspondent said.

Shubra residents tried to force the attackers away from Shubra towards al-Laymoun Bridge leading to Ramsis area.

Several residents were injured in the clashes while some youths decided to form vigilante groups to defend Shubra Police Station against attempts of armed Muslim Brotherhood elements to break into it.

Some military aircrafts circled over the area.
