CAIRO, Jul 7 (Aswat Masriya) - Libyan gunmen kidnapped an Egyptian national and demanded ransom from his wife on Monday, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported.

The kidnapped national resided in Libya's southwestern city of Sabha. His wife was asked to pay 70 thousand Libyan dinars ($51253.9) to secure his release, a security source told MENA.

Libya has been caught up in unprecedented violence since May 2014, when army general Khalifa Haftar declared war on Islamist forces within Libya, prompting nationwide militant fighting.

In February, Egypt's air force conducted air strikes which it says hit militant targets, after the beheading of 20 Egyptians inside Libya at the hands of militants believed to belong to a Libyan division of the Islamic State fighters.

Despite the violence faced by Egyptian nationals residing in Libya amid the militancy witnessed by the neighouring country, Egyptian workers have remained intent on traveling to Libya in search of better working conditions.
