CAIRO, Apr 9 (Aswat Masriya) - Two policemen were killed when an explosive device went off while a security patrol was passing by a road in North Sinai's al-Arish late Wednesday, the Interior Ministry said.

The attack also left three conscripts injured, the ministry added in a statement.

A house in Sheikh Zuweid was also shelled Wednesday night, leaving 11 civilians killed and six more injured, a medical source said, adding that five of the fatalities were children. The shelling occurred during clashes between security forces and "extremists".

Militancy inside Egypt has seen a significant rise since July 2013, since the military ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, following mass protests against his rule. Most attacks target security forces in North Sinai.

Security forces killed over 300 suspected militants in security campaigns in North Sinai during the months of February and March, the armed forces spokesman announced in a number of separate statements.
