Egypt's top prosecutor has ordered an investigation in a lawsuit accusing the interior minister and the chief of Torah Prison of torturing a prisoner until he lost his eyesight.

“Major Ashraf Khafaga, Chief of Torah Prison, tortured a prisoner, humiliated and assaulted him until he lost his eyesight, which contradicts the most basic human rights, laws and constitutions,” said the complaint filed by the victim's brother, Hani Hamdan.

The lawsuit demanded that the prosecutor-general takes all the necessary legal actions against everyone involved in this incident, and that he assigns a number of prosecutors to investigate the situation in Torah Prison.

The complaint also called for assigning medical care to the victim, who has went on food strike since the incident, and writing a medical report on the injuries he sustained from being subjected to systematised torture.
