Egypt parliament expands, to include 630 MPs

CAIRO, May 12 (Aswat Masriya) Egypt's next parliament will consist of 630 members, an official has said.
Mohamed Fawzy, the spokesman of the committee concerned with amending the "political rights and parliamentary affairs" law, added late on Sunday that 600 members will be elected while 30 will be appointed by the president, in accordance with the constitution.
In 2012, an elected parliament under President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood consisted of 444 members in addition to 10 members appointed by the ruling MB party.
The Islamist parliament was soon discredited however due to a high court order annulling the law its election was based on.
Fawzy said that the increase in the number of MPs reflects the need to step up the representation of Egyptians, pointing out that more districts will now have a voice in parliament.
There are 54 million eligible voters in Egypt.
Parliamentary elections are expected to follow this month's presidential race between former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.
