Egypt’s health ministry announced on Sunday that the number of injuries has reached 44 in violent confrontations that erupted on Saturday in Cairo and other governorates.

Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in several governorates on Saturday in demonstrations to mark the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the ‘April 6’ movement.

The state news agency reported a source as saying that the wounded were transferred to local hospitals for medical attention.

The April 6 youth movement, a prominent player in the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak, supported Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in his runoff against his Mubarak-era rival, but later joined the opposition.

The movement organized several demonstrations on Saturday where it chanted anti-regime slogans against the president and the Muslim Brotherhood from which Mursi hails.
