Fayoum Governor Gaber Abdel Salam said on Monday he did not receive any information about the army's taking over the governorate's headquarters and said he is officially still governor of Fayoum.

Army Colonel Nabil Abdel Hamid said he took over Fayoum governorate's headquarters and dismissed the city's governor Gaber Abdel Salam earlier on Monday.

Groups of thugs attempted to break into the governorate's headquarters, the governor said.

He added that army and police forces cooperated with these thugs and allowed dozens of them into the building.

According to the law, only the president is responsible for appointing and dismissing governors, the governor stated.

Hundreds of residents gathered in front of the governorate’s headquarters to celebrate this step and express their support for the army taking over.

Egypt's Armed Forced issued earlier on Monday a statement calling on all powers to reach a consensus within 48 hours or the Armed Forces will then announce a roadmap for the future.
