Sudanese court preliminarily sentences Egyptian fishermen for breaching waters - state agency

CAIRO, Apr 23 (Aswat Masriya) - A Sudanese court sentenced 29 Egyptian fishermen and sailors to pay a fine of 5,000 Sudanese pounds each or to two years in jail for anyone who fails to pay, on Thursday, state news agency MENA said.
They were put on trial for breaching the territorial waters of Sudan.
Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan Osama Shaltout was cited by MENA as saying the Egyptian embassy and consulate have both followed the trial sessions, adding that the preliminary sentence handed to the fishermen will be appealed.
The court is currently making a decision on 35 other Egyptian fishermen, facing trial in the same case.
Earlier this month, three Egyptian fishing boats, carrying more than 100 fishermen and sailors were seized by Sudanese authorities in Port Sudan, the main port city of Egypt's southern neighbour. They were reportedly caught while on their way to Eritrea.
Shaltout said six minors and one elderly man, among those caught, were deported to Egypt.
He added that the Egyptians detained in Port Sudan are well treated and are being provided with the means to communicate with family.
