NORTH SINAI, Dec 14 (Aswat Masriya) – Two policemen were killed in an armed attack by unidentified assailants near al-Arish Police Station in North Sinai early Sunday, police sources said.

A 37-year old policeman died instantly after he was shot in the chest and abdomen. The other policeman died at the Arish Military Hospital due to wounds sustained in the attack, sources said. The policemen were on their way to work at the time of the attack, reported state-run news agency MENA.

Security forces combed the area after the attack in search of the assailants.

Militants have stepped up attacks targeting security forces in Egypt, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula, since the army's ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, which followed mass protests against his rule.

At least 30 military personnel were killed in a suicide blast which targeted a security checkpoint in Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid on October 24, in the worst militant attack since Mursi’s ouster.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi declared a three-month state of emergency and a nighttime curfew in parts of the Sinai Peninsula in response to the deadly attacks.
