CAIRO, Jan 27 (Aswat Masriya) - A car carrying an explosive device exploded in the vicinity of a police station in the coastal city of Alexandria early Tuesday, killing one of the passengers and injuring two others.

The four passengers of the car, identified as members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, were on their way to plant the explosive device when it went off outside the Raml Police Station, reported state-run news agency MENA.  

A security source told Aswat Masriya no identification cards could be found with any of the passengers. He added that security forces are currently trying to identify them.

Violence spread nationwide on Sunday, which marked the fourth anniversary of the January 2011 uprising. At least 23 were killed and 97 were injured in the violence, according to Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar.

Security forces arrested 516 individuals affiliated with the banned Muslim Brotherhood on Sunday, Egypt's Interior Minister announced on Monday.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been rallying for protests nationwide to commemorate the anniversary. A 17-year old girl was killed during a Brotherhood protest in Alexandria on Friday.

Egypt listed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation in December 2013 and insists it is behind the stringent wave of militancy which has targeted security personnel since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. The Brotherhood continuously denies the accusations.
