CAIRO, Nov. 8 (Aswat Masriya) – Investigative journalist Hossam Bahgat is awaiting interrogation by the military prosecution, said Mada Masr’s Editor-in-chief Lina Attallah Sunday. 

According to the Mada Masr website, Bahgat said that there is a possibility he might be charged with “publishing inaccurate and false information that harms national interest."

Mada Masr added that no charges have been formally brought against him at this time.

Bahgat was served a summons on Thursday at his home in Alexandria and arrived to the Military Intelligence headquarters in Nasr City on Sunday, but was not allowed to enter with his phone or be accompanied by a lawyer, according to Mada Masr.

Bahgat has been a reporter with the website since 2014. Prior to that, he was the founding executive director of a Cairo-based human rights organization, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) from 2002 to 2013.

He has authored several controversial pieces for Mada, including one on the Arab Sharkas cell, the alleged terrorist cell of nine people, six of whom were executed last May.

Most recently, Bahgat wrote “ A coup busted” a daring, detailed investigation of the secret military trial of 26 army officers accused of plotting "regime change" in coordination with the Banned Muslim Brotherhood group, now designated a terrorist organization.

A hashtag in solidarity with Bahgat began trending on social media networks Sunday.

Bahgat received Human Rights Watch's Alison Des Forges award in 2011.
