CAIRO, Mar 17 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt will hold an international public tender to launch a promotional campaign for the country abroad from 2015 until 2018, the tourism minister was cited by the state news agency MENA as saying on Tuesday.

Tourism Minister Khaled Rami said the campaign would target "principal and promising markets", MENA reported. He added that the campaign would be a necessary tool to regain inbound tourism.

The deadline for submitting tender applications is May 31, reported MENA.

Tourism was a main source of income in Egypt until a popular uprising which toppled former President Hosni Mubarak's regime in 2011 triggered four years of political turmoil, taking its toll on tourism.

Rami had said in the Egypt Economic Development Conference, held over the weekend in the resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, that the state is aiming to increase the number of tourists in 2020 to 20 million tourists, consequently increasing tourism revenues to reach $20 billion.

Tourism revenues make up 11.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product and 14.4 percent of Egypt's foreign exchange earnings, according to official figures.
