CAIRO, Dec 21 (Aswat Masriya) - Liberal and leftist parties held a conference on Saturday to announce the merger of the Free Egyptians Party and the Democratic Front Party.

The Free Egyptians Party head Ahmed Saeed, party founder Naguib Sawiris, the Democratic Front Party founder Osama al-Ghazali Harb, and potential presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi attended the conference.

"We announce today the first merger between two liberal parties in contemporary political history," said Ahmed Saeed during the conference.

The Egyptian civil current's unity is neither a luxury nor a mere alliance imposed by temporary circumstances, Saeed stated.

The Free Egyptians Party came fourth as part of the Egyptian Bloc in the parliamentary elections that took place at the end of 2011.
