CAIRO, Sept 24 (Aswat Masriya) – Egypt's top prosecutor Hisham Barakat referred on Wednesday a policeman to the criminal court for indecently assaulting a female detainee while she was in custody. 

The defendant, a policeman working at Giza's Imbaba Police Station,  is accused of taking the 16-year old detainee from the detention room and indecently assaulting her on August 27, according to a statement released by the prosecutor general's office. 

Fellow female defendants testified to the prosecution witnessing the incident as it happened through a small opening in the door of the detention room. The assaulted detainee recognised the policeman as her harasser, the statement added.

The Forensics Authority's report said the victim is suffering from a mental illness and a psychological disorder which makes her unaware of the settings and causes her to suffer from auditory hallucinations, the prosecution said.

The majority of Egyptian women (99.3 percent) have experienced sexual harassment of some sort, while 96.5 percent have faced sexual assault, according to a report issued in 2013 by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
