CAIRO, Feb 9 (Aswat Masriya) – The Egyptian Football Association announced the indefinite suspension of all football activity after at least 19 were killed in a deadly encounter involving football fans and security forces on Sunday night.

The football association made the announcement in a statement early on Monday and the suspension includes all divisions of the football league. It came after the Egyptian cabinet announced the indefinite suspension of the Egyptian Premier League.

The deadly incident took place outside a football stadium in Cairo, ahead of game between Zamalek and Enppi clubs, leaving 19 dead, according to east Cairo's prosecution.

The ministry of interior said in a statement that it organised the entry of ticket holders but that afterwards, more than 10,000 fans who do not hold tickets for the game gathered outside the stadium, "scrambling to storm the gates and climb the stadium's fence."

The ministry said dozens were injured "as a result of the stampede".

It added that security forces dispersed the fans, after which they went to a nearby road disrupting traffic.

However, "Ultras White Knights" group, which supports the Zamalek Sporting Club, said on its Facebook page that the police "initiated with firing teargas towards fans" outside the stadium.

The group said only a narrow "metal gate, surrounded by barbed wire" was designated for the entry of fans. The group said when people started scrambling inside the gate, "teargas and birdshot were fired."

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat ordered conducting an autopsy on each of those killed, he said in a statement released by his office.

The game was eventually played, starting 40 minutes after its original scheduled time.

This was the first football game for Zamalek club where fans were allowed to attend, since February 2012.

On February 1, 2012 over 70 football fans were killed inside a stadium in Port Said, following a game and games were held in the absence of fans since.

In December 2014, the Interior Ministry said it will allow football fans to attend the second leg games of the Egyptian Premier League, but with a maximum of 10,000 fans in games played in Cairo and Alexandria.
