Clashes between security forces and protesters in Suez - Aswat Masriya
CAIRO, April 17 (Aswat Masriya) - Prosecutor General of Suez referred 40 members and supporters of the Mulims Brotherhood to a criminal court on Thursday on charges of murder and attempted murder during violence in Suez.
Clashes involving supporters and opponents of deposed President Mohamed Mursi in Suez broke out on 22 November of last year, killing a 10-year-old and injuring others. Another man was killed in violence that erupted on 10 January earlier this year.
The prosecution charged the defendants with murder and attempted murder, and joining a terrorist organisation that incites violence.
On Wednesday, the prosecutor general referred 51 Brotherhood supporters to a Cairo criminal court for killing three policemen and three citizens and besieging the Helwan Police Station after the pro-Mursi Rabaa sit-in was cleared by force last August.
Violence flared across Egypt after Mursi had been removed from power in August 2013 following mass protests against him.
Around 1,000 of his supporters were killed during the clearing out of Rabaa and Nahda camps and in confrontations with security forces.
Interrogations and trials of thousands of Mursi and Brotherhood supporters are ongoing following a wave of violence that targeted churches, police stations, government offices as well as the death of hundreds of civilians and policemen.
