CAIRO, Jul 9 (Aswat Masriya) - An Egyptian misdemeanour court sentenced a driver to six months in jail on a 2000 Egyptian pound bail on Thursday for running over and killing a student at the German University in Cairo.
Yara Tarek, a freshman at the university's engineering department, was crushed between two buses at the university's parking lot in March, shortly dying afterwards.
The court handed four other defendants in the case, three drivers and a buses superviser at the university, suspended jail sentences of six months.
The defendants were all accused of manslaughter.
All defendants will be released from custody, except for the driver who was sentenced on bail; he will only be released if the ruling is appealed and if the bail is paid.
Tarek's death prompted protests among university students, who held an on-campus sit-in. The university meanwhile suspended classes for three days, mourning her death.
