Members of Egypt's public prosecution decided on Monday to halt their three-day strike which was planned to start on Tuesday January 8.

In a statement issued today, the prosecution said the reason for halting the strike is to provide more time for deliberation among prosecution members and to avoid accusations for the prosecution of disrupting interests of the public.

Putting the suspension on hold does not mean abolishing the whole idea, the statement added.

The general assembly's meeting of the public prosecution will be held on January 14 to discuss the issue.

The partial suspension of work at some prosecution offices is "in effect until the chief public prosecutor leaves his post and another who serves all Egyptians and not a specific faction is appointed".

Prosecution members had decided to fully suspend their work in protest against Chief Public Prosecutor Talaat Ibrahim Abdallah remaining in post.

The Supreme Judicial Council had urged Abdallah to resign from his post following protests against him.

President Mohamed Mursi issued last November a decree that gave him the power to topple former chief public prosecutor Judge Abdel Maguid Mahmod and appoint Abdallah in his place.
