The Popular Current on Tuesday stated it will not have any candidates on the lists of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The elections are scheduled to be held soon but no date had been announced yet.

President Mohamed Mursi is expected to announce the date by February 25 at the latest as per the newly drafted constitution. Yet the Supreme Constitutional Court's rejection of some articles in the proposed elections law on grounds of their unconstitutionality may hinder the elections process until the law is approved.

In a statement it issued today, the Popular Current explained that it will not take part in the elections because it "will not support a regime that turned against all the objectives of the January revolution and the sacrifices of its martyrs" and victims.

The decision comes as a response to the regime's disregard of all forms of popular participation in the decision making process, the current said.

Our goal is to continue the revolution with our people, it added.

The Popular Current praised the civil disobedience in Port Said, saying that it "presents a model to be followed by all governorates in Egypt".
