Foreign Policy Chief of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, urges Egyptians, including their President Mohamed Mursi, to restore faith in democracy after the adoption of a new constitution.

Mursi has approved into effect a constitution written by his Islamist allies after the elections commission announced that 63.8 percent of Egyptians have voted "yes" in the referendum on the text.

"I call on all parties to begin dialogue to progress towards democracy and I urge the president to work towards this," Ashton said on Wednesday as reported by the state news agency.

She stressed on the importance of returning to the democratic path, praising that peacefulness of Egypt's constitutional referendum which she claimed she watched closely.

Describing Egypt as a close ally, the Foreign Policy Chief reaffirmed the EU's support for Egypt's democratic transition.  

The Middle East's largest country has witnessed political unrest that its economy paid for since the toppling of autocrat Hosni Mubarak early last year.
