Egypt's National Council for Women announced its solidarity with gynecologists  against Female genital mutilation (FGM) on Monday.

A statement issued by gynecologists from the Egyptian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology pointed that they feel responsible for the mental and physical health of Egyptian women.

The statement slammed suggestions for doctors to conduct FGM and other suggestions to annul the law criminalizing FGM which took years of hard work to be issued.

The Egyptian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology urged Egyptian doctors from all fields to raise awareness of the harms of the practice.

It also urged the health ministry and doctors syndicate to enforce the law against FGM  - issued in 2008.

Obstetrics and gynecology experts from Egyptian universities, the health ministry, armed forces, police and volunteer doctors all signed the statement.
