Egypt’s High Constitutional Court has set June 2 to announce its verdict on the dissolution of the Shura Council and constitution-writing assembly.

The upper house, known as the Shura Council, is currently acting as the country’s legislature due to the absence of a People’s Assembly or a House of Representatives.

The court ordered the dissolution of the People’s Assembly last June upon a ruling that invalidated the law its election was based on.

The constitutional court referred the appeals to dissolve the two Islamist-led bodies to the board of commissioners in January for recommendation.

The commissioners declared the election law void, but their recommendations are not binding on the court.

The constitutional court will also be hearing legal challenges filed against the makeup of the assembly which passed a new constitution at the end of last year.

The commissioners considered the lawsuits were meaningless because the constitution was already effective.
