CAIRO, Sep 6 (Aswat Masriya) – Egypt expressed “discomfort” over the lack of an agreement related to technical studies on the impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), state news agency MENA reported Sunday.

The studies were originally scheduled to be completed and sent to Egypt on September 5 but Egypt is yet to receive them, Water Minister Hossam Moghazi told MENA.

Accordingly, Egypt will conduct urgent consultations with Ethiopia and Sudan to revive talks on the construction of the dam to determine the possible options that can serve the interests of the three countries, said Moghazi.

The water and irrigation minister stressed Egypt’s commitment to the declaration of principles on the Ethiopian dam, which was signed by the three countries on March 23 in Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The three countries have held multiple tripartite meetings since Ethiopia started constructing GERD in May 2013.

The construction of the dam triggered the fear of possible shortage of water in Egypt.

For decades, Egypt has annually been receiving 55 billion cubic meters of the Nile River’s water, the largest share, as per agreements in the past century.
