A security checkpoint in Rafah on the borders, August 2012 - Reuters
CAIRO, Feb 28 (Aswat Masriya) - A conscript was injured when armed assailants attacked a security checkpoint in North Sinai's Rafah city on Saturday evening, security sources said.
In statements to Aswat Masriya, the security sources said the conscript suffered gunshot wounds to his right hand and was hospitalised. Medical sources at a hospital in North Sinai added that the conscript was receiving treatment.
Militancy inside Egypt has seen a significant rise since July 2013, with most attacks targeting security forces in North Sinai.
A Sinai-based militant group called Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, is Egypt's most notorious militant group having claimed more responsibility for attacks than any other group in the country.
Ansar pledged allegiance to Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria last November, renaming itself as the "Sinai Province".
Egyptian security forces continuously carry out operations to curb militancy, especially in Sinai.
