CAIRO, Feb 2 (Aswat Masriya) An Egyptian court has sentenced 16 supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi to five years in prison, with labor, over violence that erupted in Nasr City’s Mostafa al-Nahass Street on December 27.

The defendants were accused of "spreading chaos, thuggery, blocking the road, attacking the police, resisting the authorities, protesting without permit and belonging to a terrorist armed gang whose purpose is to threaten national peace and vandalize private and public property".

The defendants may appeal the verdict.

Tens of Muslim Brotherhood supporters – which was declared as a terrorist organization in December – were protesting in Mostafa al-Nahass and Khalifa al-Maamon when they clashed with security forces who used teargas to disperse them.

Many demonstrations have been held since the army’s ouster of Mursi in July in response to mass demonstrations across the country.
