CAIRO, Nov 27 (Aswat Masriya) – The constituent assembly tasked with amending Egypt's constitution resumed its sessions on Wednesday, with some of the members who said they suspended their membership attending.
Around ten assembly members suspended their membership on Tuesday in reaction to the arrest of some protesters who participated in a demonstration outside Shura Council, where the assembly convenes, to denounce a constitutional article that allows military trial for civilians.
The assembly members who decided to freeze their membership are Diaa Rashwan, Haggag Adol, Mosaad Abul Fagr, Amr Salah, Hoda al-Sada, Hussein Abdel Razek, Mahmoud Badr, Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Mahmoud Eid and Khaled Youssef.
Assembly Head Amr Moussa said he was not formally informed of the withdrawals and that he only heard about it through media outlets.
The police used water cannons and teargas to disperse the protest in the first enforcement of the newly-enacted protest law that largely restricts the right to peaceful assembly.
The law mandates that protesters notify the authorities of demonstrations at least three days prior to it. They must also notify the authorities of the number of protesters and slogans they plan to chant.
Security forces arrested around 28 protesters, according to the latest official statement by the Interior Ministry.
Mosaad Abul Fagr said he was informed that the cabinet is reviewing the protest law, adding, "We are keen that the assembly continues its work. Most of those who suspended their membership will change their stance in accordance with the cabinet's decision."
Another assembly member said that the "assembly did not suspend its work; my stance yesterday was an objection to the security's treatment of the protesters."
From his side, Interior Ministry Representative Ali Abdul Mola said, "What happened yesterday was an enforcement of law, either we are a state or we are not."
