CAIRO, Jul 16 (Aswat Masriya) - EgyptAir cancelled its flights to Istanbul for Saturday, the company said in a statement, following a coup attempt in Turkey.

Turkish military declared late on Friday they've taken control of the country, before forces loyal to the government managed to fight back and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Saturday that the government was in charge.

Flights number MS 737 and MS 735 that were scheduled from Cairo to Istanbul at 9:50 and 14:20 Cairo local time have been cancelled, EgyptAir said.

The state-owned carrier said the cancellation decision comes "in light of recent events in Turkey...and the subsequent instability at Ataturk international airport".

EgyptAir has 14 weekly flights to Istanbul. It remains unclear when the Egypt-based carrier will resume its flights to Istanbul.

Several other airlines cancelled their flights to Turkey on Saturday including British Airways and Aegean Airlines.
