CAIRO, May 11 (Aswat Masriya) – Prominent political activist and member of the April 6 Youth Movement Sherif al-Roubi was ordered to be released on Wednesday pending investigation into accusations of belonging to a "terrorist" group and inciting protest.

Roubi is ordered to be released on a bail of EGP 1,000.

The prosecution accused al-Roubi, who was arrested on Apr. 22, of belonging to a "terrorist group" and calling for protests planned for Apr. 25, according to his lawyer Doaa Mostafa.

The arrest came amid a security sweep that preceded calls for protests on Apr. 25, which were organised in opposition to a recently signed border demarcation agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

The border agreement, which stipulates that Egypt will hand over control over the two Red Sea islands, Tiran and Sanafir, to Saudi Arabia, has stirred controversy in Egypt.

Several political forces and public figures had called on Egyptians to participate in the protests including the Egyptian Social Democratic Party and the Strong Egypt Party, in addition to a number of student groups and youth movements and the two former presidential candidates Hamdeen Sabahi and Khaled Ali.

The April 6 democratic front movement and the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood group were also among the political forces that called on people to protest on Apr. 25.

The April 6 Movement was one of the main actors in the January 2011 Uprising, which resulted in the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak after he ruled the country for 30 years.

The movement later split into two groups. Roubi is a member of the "democratic front".
