Five years after being part of the January 2011 Uprising, an unprecedented mass movement for Egyptians at the time, five young Egyptians reflected on their experience with Aswat Masriya.

This Monday marks the fifth anniversary of the uprising, which is often referred to as the Jan. 25 Revolution, in reference to the date in which the 18-days of protests began.

Aswat Masriya asked the youth to respond to its questions, as they would on Twitter, a social media website which along with Facebook, played a vital role in helping protesters organise five years ago.

Malek Adly, human rights lawyer and defender

"One of the greatest events in the history of Egypt... the revolution succeeded in creating a real opposition, which pays a heavy price for its positions... One day the battle will be decided in the favour of the heroes."

Khaled Abdel Hamid, coordinator at Freedom for the Brave advocacy group

"I took part in the January revolution and owe great apologies to the men and women who are paying years as the high price for our arrogant dreams."

Dalia Ziada, director of Cairo-based think tank Liberal Democracy Institute

"Egypt is finally starting to achieve the goals of the revolution through real and concrete steps, after five years... the revolution continues in building democratic life."

Esraa Abdel Fattah, journalist and blogger

"The past year was hardest for the revolution but the coming of the fifth anniversary gives us new hope... The revolution continues and is not over yet. "

Mostafa Alnagar, writer and former member of parliament

"The January revolution is the greatest event in my life whose goals have not been achieved yet, but they will be achieved no matter how long [it takes] because they are the will of the people."
