CAIRO, Oct. 25 (Aswat Masriya) - Five people were killed in Alexandria on Sunday, the ministry of health said, as inclement weather wreaked havoc across the country. 

The Mediterranean city of Alexandria was flooded by heavy rain when a power cable from the Moharam Bek tram station came loose, electrocuting three people to death.  

The Health Ministry said in a statement that two children, brothers, were killed in the incident.

Two students injured in the incident have been hospitalised, state run news agency MENA had earlier reported.

A 25-year-old man was also electrocuted to death, in a separate incident, after he fell into a hole that contained a power cord.

The last casualty was a sea captain who was trapped when water surrounded his car, drowning him.  

An eyewitness told Aswat Masriya that the rainwater had blocked cars and public transportation, leading to a traffic pile-up along the seafront, where the water was as high as the corniche wall.

Earlier in the day, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he is following up on the situation in Alexandria with "great attention."

Sisi tasked Cabinet with taking all the necessary procedures in coordination with state institutions and the armed forces to contain the crisis, a presidency statement said. 

He emphasised the importance of providing all the necessary care to all harmed citizens and relief to the families of the deceased. 

Power was also disrupted across the province of Aswan in Upper Egypt, because of heavy rainfall that paralysed traffic in the Nile River and obstructed transportation on highways. 

In Kafr El-Sheikh, also a Mediterranean province, the port has been closed to ships and fishing boats since the morning after high winds and showers hit the province. Owners of small boats were told not to sail for their own safety. 

The rainfall has further disrupted power in dozens of villages in Kafr El-Sheikh. 

Earlier, the port of Rashid, a coastal city to the east of Alexandria, and the port of Ain Sokhna, a Red Sea resort city, were both shut down. 

There were also heavy rains in Greater Cairo.

The state's meteorological authority described today's weather as "unstable" and expects a "marked drop" in temperatures, it said on its website. 

Rain is expected across "most of the country," and a thunderstorm is expected in Sinai, where, the authority said, heavy showers may cause flooding which will also affect the Red Sea Hills in the eastern desert and the south of the country.

The rainy weather is forecast to continue well into the next two days during which both the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea will be turbulent, the authority said.

The weather is expected to start improving on Wednesday.
