Israel is not interfering in Egyptian affairs and is waiting to see the nature of the new regime, sources in the Israeli foreign ministry said. They denied that their ambassador in Egypt, Yaakov Amitai, was allowed to open a channel with Islamists in Egypt.
The Middle East News Agency quoted Israel Radio Wednesday saying that the Israeli foreign ministry does not interfere in Egyptian affairs and did not ask its ambassador in Cairo to meet any political faction.
Israeli newspaper Maariv confirmed today that the foreign ministry has given Amitai the liberty to decide whether to contact with the Muslim Brotherhood after they came out the main winners in the elections.
Director-General of the Israeli foreign ministry, Rafi Barak, earlier refused a request from former Israeli ambassor to Egypt Isaac Levanon to open a channel with Islamists shortly after the January 25 revolution and the fall of former president Mubarak’s regime.
