CAIRO, Sep 14 (Aswat Masriya) – Seven Mexicans were killed when Egyptian security forces "accidentally" opened fire on a tourist convoy on Sunday, a prosecution official told Aswat Masriya on Monday.

This is the first count provided by an official on the number of deaths among the Mexican tourists.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said a dozen Egyptians and Mexican tourists were killed and 10 others were injured during a security chase of "terrorists" in al-Wahat area in the western desert.

The ministry did not say how many of the deceased were Egyptians and how many were Mexicans.

The group was in a "restricted area," the ministry said.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry vowed on Monday to conduct investigations into their deaths.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto described the incident as “tragic” and demanded that the Egyptian government conduct “a thorough investigation.”

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri offered his condolences to his Mexican counterpart Claudia Ruiz Massieu. The minister said that the tourists were “in a restricted operations area."
