SOHAG, June 23 (Aswat Masriya) An Egyptian police officer was killed in an exchange of fire during a security operation in the southern governorate of Sohag on Monday, the state news agency said.

The operation's purpose was to capture a number of dangerous criminals known for kidnappings, MENA added.

When the authorities arrived to the scene, the criminals began shooting at them resulting in an exchange of fire that killed the police officer.

Attacks against security forces have increased since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood last year.
