CAIRO, Mar 17 (Aswat Masriya) - A Cairo court sentenced two people to prison with hard labour for two years for insulting the prosecution on Tuesday.

The two sentenced today are among 68 defendants in a trial, commonly referred to as the Zawahri cell trial because it features Mohamed Zawahri, the brother of al Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahri.

An eyewitness said several defendants insulted the representative of the prosecution while he was making his argument in court today.

In January, several defendants in the case including Zawahri were sentenced to a year with labour for insulting the judiciary.

All defendants are accused of establishing a "terrorist" organisation in affiliation with al Qaeda. They were referred to criminal court by Egypt's top prosecutor in April, 2014.

The prosecutor's decision said Zawahri used the changes in the political scene in the country to resume activities in leading the Islamic Jihad militant group during the reign of ousted president Mohamed Mursi.

Zawahri was arrested on August 17, 2013, about six weeks after Mursi's ouster at the hands of the military after mass protests against his rule.

The trial was postponed, with the next session convening on April 12.
