CAIRO, May 11 (Aswat Masriya) Egypt's former army chief and presidential hopeful Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said in a televised interview on Sunday that if necessary he may have to amend the peace treaty with Israel if he is elected president. 

Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 under former President Anwar al-Sadat who was assassinated three years later. 

Egyptians will vote for a new president this May in a race between Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.

Sisi gained wide popularity last year after the ousting of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in response to mass demonstrations against his rule. 

Sabahi came third in the 2012 presidential elections that brought Mursi to power.
