Court orders release of ex-PM Ahmed Nazif on corruption charges

A Cairo criminal court ruled on Tuesday that former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif be released on charges of squandering public funds, guaranteeing his place of residence, if he is not detained on other charges.

Nazif was accused of selling metal plates to a company at an amount that is less than their worth, squandering 92 million Egyptian pounds belonging to the state.

The court set July 27 for his retrial.

Egypt’s Cassation Court annulled Nazif’s one-year sentence last February in the metal plates case and granted him a suspended sentence.

Meanwhile, a criminal court accepted Nazif's appeal against his detention pending an investigation in illicit gains and ordered his release on Thursday.

It granted him a retrial two weeks ago and annulled a ruling that sentenced him to three years in prison in the illicit gains case.
