CAIRO, Oct 19 (Aswat Masriya) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his Sudanese counterpart Omar Hassan al-Bashir agreed on Saturday to elevate the joint Egypt-Sudan committee from the ministerial level to the presidential one.

Sisi welcomed Bashir in the presidential palace on Sunday before the latter's visit to Cairo elapsed, reported state-run news agency MENA.

The heads of states discussed the joint committee, noting that elevating its level would reinforce and support cooperation between both countries in different fields.

Sisi and Bashir also touched upon regional developments, especially the situation in neighbouring Libya, reported MENA. The presidents stressed the importance of supporting Libya's "legitimate institutions" and coordinating efforts to achieve stability in the conflict-torn country.

Militant fighting in Libya has recently intensified in unpreceded measures since the overthrow of late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Army general Khalifa Haftar declared war on Islamist forces inside Libya since May. 

Bashir arrived in Cairo on Saturday for a two-day visit with a Sudanese delegation.

Shortly after being elected president, Sisi visited Khartoum briefly on June 27 and met with Bashir during his short stay in the neighbouring country.

The International Criminal Court issued two arrest warrants for Bashir in July 2009 and March 2010, accusing him of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
