Calm and order has returned to Egypt's Tahrir Square and areas leading to it following Monday's scuffles, reported the Middle East News Agency.

Clashes between protesters and security forces broke out on Monday evening, continuing until the early hours of Tuesday.

Thousands of activists had rallied on Monday to commemorate the anniversary of the "Mohamed Mahmoud" clashes of last November where over 40 people were killed in scuffles with security.

After Hosni Mubarak was toppled by a popular uprising last year, a military council ruled the country where occasional violent clashes between security forces and protesters left scores dead.
