Heavy security measures were taken to secure the passage of the American destroyer James Williams and the nuclear-powered submarine Toledo through Suez Canal on Saturday on their way to the Mediterranean sea headed back to the United States, a maritime source at the canal has said.
The security procedures which lasted for almost 14 hours included stopping the passage of ferries transporting vehicles and individuals between the banks of the canal, sealing al-Salam Bridge in Qantara Sharq area and securing roads leading and parallel to the canal, the source has told the Middle East News Agency (MENA).
A dredger of the Suez Canal will also accompany the destroyer and the submarine in case of emergencies, the source added.
