The first hearing in the trial of prominent activist Ahmed Douma, who has been accused of insulting the president and disrupting public order, is expected to take place later today.

A prosecutor ordered that Douma be detained for four days pending investigations on Tuesday over allegations of spreading false information likely to harm the public interest and slandering Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, describing him as a criminal and outlaw.

Egypt stepped up security at the Tanta criminal court in Gharbiya where Douma will be tried on Sunday, after several movements announced their intention to hold demonstrations in solidarity with the activist.
