Egypt’s Council for Women has expressed dissatisfaction with the position given to women by the new parliamentary election law which the Shura Council discussed on Wednesday.

In a statement on Thursday, the National Council for Women explained that it was unhappy that the law required that only one seat be occupied by a female candidate on every electoral list.

It added that beside failing to be representative of the true size of women in Egypt, which makes up about 48.9 percent of the population and 41 percent of the voter body, the law also does not state where women should be placed on the lists.

NCW chairman Mervat al-Talawy has insisted that Egyptian women's participation in parliament is the lowest in the region.
