A lieutenant and a conscript were killed and others were injured on Sunday evening when armed Muslim Brotherhood elements attacked a police patrol on the Cairo-Ismailia desert road, a Ministry of Interior official said.

Some Brotherhood elements opened fire on a patrol vehicle as it scanned the road, the official said on the ministry's Facebook page.

A conscript and Lieutenant Mohamed Hassan Hassanein, an officer at Ismailia's security forces headquarters, were shot dead.

Two other conscripts were badly injured. They were taken to hospital for treatment.
