The hardline Islamist group al-Gamaa al-Islamiya's party called for participating in the planned 21 June demonstrations to voice support for President Mohamed Mursi.

Mursi does not represent the Muslim Brotherhood or the Freedom and Justice Party alone; he represents the people as a whole, senior party member Tarek al-Zomor said on Wednesday.

"The call for holding early presidential elections is not constitutional," Al-Zomor, head of the Building and Development Party's politburo, told reporters at a press conference.

In reference to the appointment of Asaad al-Khayyat as Luxor's new governor, head of the party's parliamentary group said that appointing a member of the Gamaa was the presidency's wish.

The group has nothing to do with that choice, he added.

The decision to appoint al-Khayyat as Luxor's governor has angered many, especially those working in the tourism sector.

Al-Khayyat is a communications coordinator at the Gamaa Islamiya which was responsible for an armed attack on tourists in Luxor in 1997. The attack left 58 tourists dead.

On his part, the Building and Development Party's political advisor denied his party was involved in the Luxor incident.
